Spanish nationality by residence
One of the ways to obtain Spanish nationality is by residence.
The regulations indicate a general period of 10 years of legal residence in the country. However, there are exceptions that allow this period to be reduced, making obtaining Spanish nationality by residence more accessible for certain groups of people. General Case: 10 Years of Legal Residence
Generally speaking, anyone who has legally resided in Spain for at least 10 years can apply for Spanish nationality.
Exceptions: Shorter Legal Residence Time
Refugees: Those who have obtained refugee status in Spain can apply for nationality after 5 years of legal residence.
Nationals of Ibero-American Countries, Andorra, Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal and People of Sephardic Origin: Citizens of these countries can apply for Spanish nationality after 2 years of legal residence in Spain.
1 Year of Legal Residence:
People born in Spanish territory.
Those who have not properly exercised their right to acquire Spanish nationality by option.
Those who have been under the legal guardianship of a Spanish citizen or institution for 2 consecutive years, even if they continue in this situation at the time of the application.
Those under guardianship, conservatorship with powers of full representation, custody or shelter of a Spanish citizen or institution for 2 consecutive years, even if they continue in this situation at the time of the application.
People married to a Spanish man or woman for at least 1 year and not legally or de facto separated.
Widowers or widows of Spaniards, provided that at the time of death they were not legally or de facto separated.
People born outside of Spain to a father, mother, grandfather or grandmother who were originally Spanish.
